Reimagining a traditional design
All over New England there are abandoned wells. Old properties may change hands many times and information about the existence and location of old water wells can be lost with time. These wells can pose a hazard and should be identified to avoid injury.
One way to do that is to provide a lasting barricade with stone. This homeowner decided to make it a tribute to the past.
What a great project this was. I was asked to build this very nice hand crank well over an old one that was used generations ago, before wells were drilled by machine.
So yes there is a steel grate just inside this well for safety. You can still see water at the bottom.
